Living in Phoenix means preparing for one of the most intense summer climates in the country. As we all know, temperatures regularly exceed 110°F, humidity levels can spike during monsoon season, and UV exposure is relentless. For hearing aid wearers, this environment creates specific challenges that are worth understanding before summer arrives.

Heat and Your Hearing Aids

Modern hearing aids — including devices like the Phonak Infinio, Oticon Intent, ReSound Vivia, and others we fit here at Applied Hearing Solutions — contain delicate electronics, rechargeable batteries, and precision microphones. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can degrade battery performance and, in some cases, affect the internal components of the device. Leaving hearing aids in a hot car, on a poolside table, or in direct sunlight for extended periods is something we strongly advise against.

When not in use, store your hearing aids in a cool, dry place — ideally in their charging case or a protective hard case kept indoors.

Sweat and Moisture Management

Sweat is one of the most common causes of hearing aid damage we see in the summer months. Phoenix's monsoon season adds another layer of moisture exposure on top of daily heat. Most current hearing aids carry a high moisture resistance rating (IP68 in many cases), but resistance is not the same as being waterproof. Sweat, pooled water, and humidity can still work their way into devices over time.

A few practical steps help a great deal. Wiping your hearing aids down each evening with a dry, soft cloth removes moisture and debris before it has a chance to cause problems. A hearing aid dehumidifier or drying kit is a worthwhile investment — placing your devices in one overnight draws out any accumulated moisture. If you are very active outdoors, hearing aid sweat covers are available and can offer an additional layer of protection.

Sunscreen, Insect Repellent, and Other Products

Summer also means increased use of sunscreen, sprays, and lotions — all of which can clog microphone ports and damage hearing aid surfaces. Always apply these products before putting your hearing aids in, and wash your hands thoroughly before handling your devices.

Earwax and Summer Heat

Warmer temperatures can increase earwax production for some people. Excess earwax is one of the leading causes of hearing aid performance issues, particularly with receiver-in-canal styles where the speaker sits directly in the ear canal. Checking and replacing wax guards regularly — typically every few weeks in summer — keeps your devices performing as they should. If you are unsure how to do this, we are happy to walk you through it at your next visit.

When to Come In

If your hearing aids start sounding muffled, distorted, or are cutting in and out after a particularly hot or sweaty day, bring them in rather than waiting. In many cases, a thorough in-office cleaning resolves the issue quickly.

Schedule a Summer Check-Up at Applied Hearing Solutions

We recommend that our patients come in at the start of summer for a hearing aid check-up. Our team can inspect your devices, clean them properly, replace any worn components, and make sure your programming is still accurate for your needs. If it has been a while since your last visit, or if you have been experiencing any changes in your hearing, call us at (602) 877-0000 or reach out through our website to schedule an appointment. We are here Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at our north Phoenix location.
