The Programming Problem Most People Don't Know About

Did you know that over 70% of hearing aids are not programmed correctly? That's right—out of the millions of hearing aids dispensed from hearing aid clinics every year, only about one-third have been programmed to match the user's hearing loss prescription.

This means the vast majority of hearing aid users are not receiving the full amount of benefit they should with their devices. When new hearing aids are initially fit and programmed, they are typically auto-programmed with what we call manufacturer first-fit settings—initial estimates for amplification that exist to simplify the programming process, not to maximize hearing performance.

Most hearing care professionals never verify the programming beyond these initial estimates, meaning these hearing aid users are leaving significant hearing benefit on the table. This is exactly why we developed our Applied360 ReFit program.

Our 3-Appointment ReFit Process

Our Applied360 ReFit program includes three strategically scheduled appointments over three weeks to completely optimize your existing hearing aids.

1

Initial Refitting Appointment

We select proper hearing aid domes or fit new custom earmolds, verify ideal physical fit, perform Real Ear Measurement to program your devices to your actual hearing loss prescription, and complete pre-subjective outcome assessment.

2

1-Week Follow-up

We review your performance and objective data logs, make additional programming adjustments based on your experiences, progress you closer to your full hearing loss prescription, and consider additional wireless accessories if needed.

3

3-Week Completion

We complete your post-outcome assessment to determine performance improvement, initiate auditory training with the LACE AI Pro app, and graduate you to our Applied360 Thrive follow-up care plan.

Real Ear Measurement: The Key to Proper Programming

At your initial refitting appointment, we perform Real Ear Measurement to verify that the amplification levels of your hearing aids are matching your hearing loss prescriptive targets. We do this for average, loud, and soft level speech so you can optimize speech understanding in all situations.

Real Ear Measurement is the only scientifically validated way to confirm if your hearing aids are programmed correctly to your hearing loss prescription. This step is so critical to your overall performance that we have detailed information about the entire REM process on our website.

Learn about Applied360 Review.

Applied360 ReFit is intended for existing hearing aid users whose devices are mechanically functioning and capable of treating their hearing loss, but are not programmed optimally. We determine qualification through our Applied360 Review process.

Unlike simple adjustments, our Applied360 ReFit starts completely from scratch, using Real Ear Measurement to verify proper programming to your hearing loss prescription rather than relying on manufacturer estimates or basic comfort settings.

The full process takes approximately three weeks, with three structured appointments during this time. Each appointment builds on the previous one, allowing for adaptation and fine-tuning based on your real-world experiences with the updated programming.

We work with all major hearing aid manufacturers including Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, ReSound, Signia, and Widex. Most modern digital hearing aids from the past several years can be reprogrammed, though some very old models may have limitations. We'll determine compatibility during your Applied360 Review.

Sometimes a proper fitting requires new earmolds or domes to ensure optimal physical fit and acoustic performance. We'll evaluate this during your initial refitting appointment and make recommendations based on your specific hearing loss and device type.
