Golf and hearing aids have never been a great match. If you play regularly in the Phoenix or Scottsdale area, you already know the frustrations. Sweat soaking into your device, your cap pressing against the receiver, and wind noise drowning out everything on the tee are common issues. The Phonak Lyric takes a completely different approach, and for many of our patients, it's changed the game.

How the Lyric Actually Works

The Lyric isn't your typical hearing aid. An audiologist places it deep in your ear canal, and it stays there. There is no taking it out at night, no charging, and no fumbling with it every morning before you head to the course. You wear it around the clock for months at a time. When it's ready to be replaced, you come in and we swap it for a fresh one. That's it.

For someone playing three or four rounds a week under the Arizona sun, that kind of simplicity is hard to overstate.

Why Traditional Hearing Aids Struggle on the Course

Standard hearing aids are built for daily life, not 18 holes in 105-degree heat. Sweat is a constant problem; even water-resistant devices can clog or fog up after a full round. Then there's the hat issue: a behind-the-ear device sits exactly where your golf cap rests, which causes feedback, discomfort, or both.

Wind noise is another big one. A microphone sitting behind your ear picks up every gust, and in the Valley, that's relentless. Afternoon rounds at most Scottsdale courses mean you're fighting wind noise the entire back nine.

The Lyric sidesteps these problems entirely. It sits inside your ear canal, protected by your natural anatomy. Nothing sits behind your ear, nothing shifts when you put your cap on, and the microphone isn't exposed directly to the wind. Sound funnels in the way your ear was designed to receive it. Most patients describe this as noticeably more natural than what they experienced with traditional devices.

What to Expect From the Lyric Day to Day

Because the Lyric lives in your ear, there's essentially no daily routine. You shower with it in (with a few simple precautions), sleep with it, and exercise with it. There's no charging case to remember and no settings to adjust before a round. Many patients tell us they forget they're wearing it at all; this is kind of the whole point.

The trade-off is that the Lyric doesn't connect to your phone, doesn't stream audio, and can't be adjusted through an app. If you want to take a call through your hearing aids or adjust your settings mid-round, a traditional device will serve you better. The Lyric is for patients who want their hearing taken care of and prefer not to think about it again.

Is the Lyric the Right Fit for You

The Lyric works best for mild to moderate hearing loss, and your ear canal shape needs to be compatible. It's also sold on an annual subscription that covers unlimited replacements and fittings, so that's worth discussing with us before you commit.

Patients who tend to love it share a few things in common. They lead active lives, such as golf, hiking, pickleball, and cycling. They've had trouble with traditional devices falling out or causing discomfort during activity. And they value invisibility above just about everything else.

That said, the Lyric isn't the right answer for everyone. Some patients try it and prefer the flexibility and tech features of a modern hearing aid. That's completely fine. Our goal is matching you with what actually fits your hearing and your lifestyle, not steering you toward any one product.

When a Traditional Hearing Aid Makes More Sense

Today's hearing aids are genuinely impressive. Devices like the Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio offer AI-powered speech separation, Bluetooth streaming, rechargeable batteries, and real-time background noise management. If you want app control, phone connectivity, or the ability to fine-tune your hearing on the fly, a traditional device has clear advantages. The Lyric trades all of that for zero maintenance and complete discretion. Whether that trade-off works for you depends entirely on how you live.
