A technology called Auracast is fixing this, and one hearing aid can already use it today.
What Auracast Actually Does
Auracast is a broadcast feature built into newer Bluetooth. A venue connects a small transmitter to its sound system and sends audio straight to any compatible device in the building. Nobody has to borrow a receiver from a kiosk. There's no wire looped through the floor and no flagging down a staff member for help.
Your hearing aids simply pick up the signal, clean and clear, straight from the source.
Picture a radio station broadcasting inside a building. One transmitter reaches everyone in the room at the same time, no matter where they're sitting. Older assistive systems don't work that way, and that difference matters more than it sounds.
Where Hearing Loops Fall Short
You may have used a hearing loop before. Those systems run a wire around a room to send audio to the telecoil in your hearing aid, and a well-installed loop performs respectably. Consistency is the weak point. Coverage fades at the edges of the looped area, audio quality swings from venue to venue, and flexible spaces where the seating changes week to week can leave whole sections of the audience with nothing.
Auracast has no boundary to fall outside of. It broadcasts a signal rather than generating a magnetic field, so it covers the room. Back row of the hall, off to the side at church, doesn't matter. You get the same audio as everyone else.
The ReSound Vivia Is Ready Today
Plenty of manufacturers have announced Auracast-ready devices. Many of those still need a future firmware update before the feature does anything at all. GN's newer ReSound hearing aids, including the Vivia, are fully activated right now.

The Vivia doesn't force a choice between old technology and new, either. The RIE 62 model comes with a telecoil built in, and the other models can reach loop systems through the MultiMic+ accessory. You stay compatible with the venues that haven't upgraded yet.
What the Vivia Does Beyond Auracast
Auracast gets the headlines. The Vivia earns its keep without it.
This is GN's first AI-driven hearing aid, running a deep neural network trained on 13.5 million spoken sentences across multiple languages and speaking styles, roughly the equivalent of 25 years of conversation. All of that training went toward one job: separating the voice you care about from the noise around it.
Intelligent Focus is the feature worth knowing. It prioritizes sound coming from the direction you're facing, which lines up with what you already do naturally. You turn toward the person you're listening to. In a packed concert lobby or during coffee hour after a service, exactly when hearing gets hardest, that helps.

What Adoption Looks Like Around Phoenix
Auracast is still early here, and it's growing. Theaters, airports, and places of worship are expected to move toward it the same way they once adopted loop systems. Because it runs on standard Bluetooth hardware, venues face far less cost and installation work than a loop requires, which should speed things along.
