Our own Dr. Clifford Olson recently appeared on AZ Family's morning show to discuss the new Oticon Zeal hearing aid. Launched this month, the Oticon Zeal is the first device in the industry to feature second-generation artificial intelligence technology designed to help people with hearing loss understand speech more clearly.
During the interview, Dr. Olson shared insights from his unique position as both a practicing audiologist and creator of the largest YouTube channel dedicated to hearing aid reviews. This combination gives him early access to new technology, and the Oticon Zeal represents the latest innovation he's evaluated before public release.
The Oticon Zeal combines several capabilities in one device. It features second-generation Deep Neural Network technology trained on over one million sound samples to distinguish speech from background noise. The device is rechargeable, providing up to 20 hours per charge. It connects wirelessly to iPhone and Android devices for audio streaming and includes Auracast technology for public venue audio systems. The device is IP68-rated for moisture resistance and offers same-day fitting, eliminating traditional wait times with custom hearing aids.
One of the most impressive aspects of the Oticon Zeal is how it packages advanced technology into a nearly invisible design. As Dr. Olson explained,
"The Oticon Zeal that we're looking at right here is a hearing aid that does basically everything, but it's a discrete device that fits entirely inside of your ear canal."
The device includes rechargeable lithium-ion batteries providing up to 20 hours of daily use. A quick 15-minute charge can provide four hours of use when needed.
The second-generation artificial intelligence in the Oticon Zeal represents a significant leap forward. The device uses what's called a deep neural network—an artificial brain trained on over one million different sound samples. This extensive training allows the hearing aid to distinguish between speech and background noise, selectively amplifying the speech while reducing unwanted noise.
This addresses one of the most common complaints people have about hearing aids. During the interview, Dr. Olson pointed out,
"A lot of hearing aids out there, especially if they're not programmed well or they don't have the capabilities from a feature standpoint, you can't go into a noisy environment and separate speech from the noise. It makes everything louder. So you need to make sure you have a hearing aid, ideally that uses artificial intelligence to do the separation and have it programmed optimally."
The Oticon Zeal connects wirelessly to both iPhone and Android devices, giving users control through a smartphone app. You can adjust volume, change programs, and access advanced features directly from your phone.
One innovative feature Dr. Olson highlighted is Auracast broadcast technology, which allows users to tap into audio systems at public venues like theaters, churches, and live performance spaces. The hearing aids blend this broadcasted audio with sound from their built-in microphones for a seamless listening experience.
While advanced technology is impressive, Dr. Olson emphasized that even the best hearing aids won't perform properly without correct programming. This is where professional audiological care becomes indispensable. At Applied Hearing Solutions, we use Real Ear Measurement during our fitting process to verify that hearing aids are programmed precisely to match each patient's unique hearing loss prescription—not just manufacturer estimates.
This verification step can make the difference between hearing aids that merely make things louder and devices that provide clear, comfortable hearing across different listening situations.
The Oticon Zeal represents a new standard for discreet, high-performance hearing technology. If you've been hesitant about hearing aids due to concerns about visibility or performance in noisy environments, this device addresses both challenges.
We expect high demand for the Oticon Zeal following its launch. If you're interested in this technology, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our audiologists soon. We can evaluate your hearing, discuss whether the Oticon Zeal fits your needs, and create a personalized treatment plan using our comprehensive Applied360 fitting process.
