Types of Hearing Aids: Wearing Styles

Today, there are more hearing aid styles available than ever before. This wide range of options falls into two types of styles: Behind-the-ear (BTE) and In-the-ear (ITE).

Below is an overview of these styles. In the end, the best hearing aid for you will address your unique hearing ability, lifestyle, and budget.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

BTE hearing aids sit behind or on top of the outer ear with a tube that connects to an ear tip or mold inside of the ear canal. BTE’s offer the widest range of features, colors, sizes, battery types, and degrees of power.

Today, they’re offered in small, discreet designs that are often unnoticeable when worn. There are a variety of BTE styles available including:

Mini BTEs are the smallest of the BTEs and equipped with a soft tip at the end of the tubing to enable airflow and sound to enter the ear canal along with the amplified sounds, creating a more natural experience.

BTEs with Earmolds are designed with a custom earmold at the tip of the discrete tubing directing sound into the ear canal.

These have a longer shape that follows the contour of the outer ear and enables them to house more features and power.

In-The-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

ITE hearing aids are worn in the ear instead of resting behind it, and are custom-fit based on an impression of the ear. Further reading: the benefits of custom hearing aids.

There are a variety of ITE styles available including:

In the Ear (ITE) instruments fill the entire outer ear bowl.

Their larger size allows for more features and functions, including a larger battery, directional microphones, volume controls, and larger receivers for more severe hearing losses.

In the Canal (ITC) instruments sit in the lower portion of the outer ear bowl. Since they are slightly larger than the CIC, they are able to hold additional features, including a larger battery, directional microphones, and volume controls.

Invisible in Canal (IIC) instruments are the smallest custom hearing aids available. They sit deep within the canal and are nearly invisible to the naked eye.

First Time Wearers

Hearing aids are incredible tools that allow us to reconnect with our loved ones and the world around us. If you've had untreated hearing loss for some time, being a first-time user of hearing aids will take some getting used to.

Many people put off treating their hearing loss for five to seven years. We may become acclimated to duller noises and muted speech during this time. When we acquire new hearing aids, the newfound ability to perceive sounds might be overwhelming.

Remember that this is only a temporary situation, and you'll quickly adjust to the experience and benefits of wearing hearing aids, but it will take some time and work. Here are some suggestions for getting used to new hearing aids.

Be patient with yourself.

Because most types of hearing loss occur gradually, we tend to overcompensate in various ways. Our brains, in particular, become accustomed to hearing with only partial sound information, and hearing aids help to correct this by giving cleaner sound signals. As a result, our brains have to work harder to cope with the audio information stream that hearing aids provide.

Go slowly.

Spend an hour or two with your hearing aids when you initially bring them home. Gradually increase to three or four hours, then six, and so on. You'll eventually be able to wear your hearing aids for the majority of your waking hours.

Practice makes perfect.

Your own voice may sound strange in your head as you speak with new hearing aids. Read aloud to yourself with your hearing aids to become used to your voice. Practice conversations with one speaker and then graduate to more speakers as your confidence with your hearing aids grows. Hearing aids allow us to reconnect with those we care about; take advantage of this opportunity to practice listening to various voices and focusing on specific speakers.

Do I need New Hearing Aids?

There may have been changes in your hearing, it may have been five or more years since you received new hearing aids, or there may be some niggling concerns with the hearing aids you are now wearing - all of these are reasons to consider new hearing aids.

You've had your hearing aids for more than five years.

Hearing aids have a five-year life expectancy. Some last longer, while others do not, because they age and have a lifespan of three to seven years. Hearing aids do not exist in a perfect world, and they are exposed to a wide range of situations. There are wax and moisture issues in the ears and environmental issues, including water, dust, and debris. All of this can hasten their decline.

Your lifestyle has changed.

Changes in your job, home life, hobbies, or social group can provide new challenges for your hearing aids. Perhaps your profession has changed, and you're now required to attend more conferences or make sales calls in loud surroundings. The requirements for your hearing aids may have changed as a result of some adjustments.

Your hearing needs have changed.

If you notice a change in your hearing abilities, you may need to upgrade your hearing aids, as not all hearing aids work with all hearing loss levels. The first step is to make an appointment with us for a hearing test. This will allow us to determine if your hearing ability has changed since you first received your hearing aids. Following your hearing test, we will be able to guide you through all of the options for hearing aids that best meet your needs and budget.
